I have a Husky and live in Tenn., where it is very hot and humid. Is it OK to give her a hair cut in the summertime ?

Hi there,

I agree with Cookie - you shouldn't cut her hair/fur in the summer! My trainer has been involved in Husky rescue for years, and she has seen dogs that were shaved for the summer that failed to grow back their guard hairs and ended up looking like a fuzzy Q-Tip for the rest of their lives! Yikes!

Seika needs her top coat and undercoat because they work together to wick the heat away from her body in the summer (and of course, to trap the heat and keep it in during winter).

Seika may "blow coat" once or twice a year, shedding the fuzzy undercoat as the seasons change. You can try using a Furminator grooming tool to help out during this time, or take her to a groomer, to help reduce the amount of fur around your house. Frequent brushing will help, too.

As Cookie said, the key is to make sure she has plenty of cool water and shade. You can also freeze some wet dog food or peanut butter in a Kong and give it to her as a cool, fun toy during the heat of the day.

Good luck!

No, the fur is insolation on both summer and winter. Traps cool air in summer, traps warm air in winter. And prevents sunburn. Cutting a dog's fur in summer makes the heat worse on them, not better.

Just make sure that she has plenty of water at all times, that she doesn't stay outside too much, and that she has plenty of shade.

If you shave your husky that will actually do the opposite of what you want. Cause possible overheating and even sun burn. I agree with everyone else. The undercoat provides warmth in the winter time and provides protection from the sun in the summer. Make sure that the undercoat is kept brushed out because the only way your dog will get really hot is if the undercoat clumbs up like little pillows so keep brushed out really well. Give lots of water and maybe even provide a kiddy pool.

Dieta

no it is not a good idea.
Buy the dog a plastic kiddie pool instead.
Keep it clean with clean water:)

We as well have offered Deogie a kiddie pool in hopes he would get in and cool off but he never does, it is now a huge drinking bowl, we throw a bag of ice in daily, he loves eating them. We even purchased a free standing umbrella to go over it to keep it in the shade all day, but he just isn't interested in wading.
I would never shave or cut Deogie's hair, besides being insulation against the heat, it is absolutely beautiful and makes him who he is.
We will hose his feet off routinely during the day, this helps cool him down. We will do it hanging out by the pool and before and after a walk.
We have moved his walks to early morning and evening, the rest of the day he relaxes in the shade or most of the time in the house with the AC.
Your dog will manage just fine in the summer with some common sense on your part. Lots of cool water, plenty of shade to rest and walking when it's cooler.
Have a good one.
