I have a 16 week old lhasa poo. I was crate training but he doesnt make it through the night

the problem is that he starts crying to awake me after he pees and by then he is soaking wet and shivering :( which means I was up and giving him a bath almost every night at 2 am. So I started gating him in the bathroom but I think he is still peeing on the floor and it just dries by morning. Now my floor is getting warped. I need suggestions! I cannot be bathing him every day - help! His crate is the smallest - only enough time for him to turn around and I pick up the water at 6:30 and let him out around 9 for the night. Any suggestions? I dont want him soaking wet!!

At that age, it is not very probable that your puppy can hold it through the night. With toy breeds, you are sometimes up two or three times in the middle of the night to let them out. Your dog can only hold it (in hours) for half of the age it is in months - so your dog is 2 months - he can hold it for about an hour. He really should be going out that often when you can watch him, and a time or two during the night. Do you cover the crate? Sometimes that will help him to sleep and will encourage him to stay asleep. If there is some light that the dog can see through the crate, they can wake up, and will have to go potty, so they will. You are good with the size of the crate, so don't change that. You will need to treat your little guy as if he was a baby and end up having a few sleep deprived nights. Eventually he will be okay, but he is so young that he just phsycially cannot hold it. You are doing all of the right things, just try to let him out during the night if you can and this really should help you a lot.

My advice is to stop the water about 6:00 pm and then take him out around 9 or 10 oclock for potty. At this age, you should get up with him around 2 or so (it will only take a few days or maybe a couple weeks) and let him go again. Before long, he will be able to hold it over night. It is inconvenient, but well worth it.

The less room the pup has the better. They don't like to lie in their waste. Our pup was so tiny, the crate was too large. We put a small plastic bucket face down in the back of the crate to take so that she had less room to move. That worked great. Hope everything turns out ok.

Dogs that age do not have a big enough bladder to hold it for that length of time. They are like babies and need to be taken out every few hours. I would suggest setting an alarm and taking him out every 3 hours until he gets to the point where he CAN hold it longer. He is crying because he is soiled and doesn't like it. That is a good sign; it means that he doesn't want to mess in his crate, but probably that he just can help it. Putting him in the bathroom where he can mess all night long and get away from it is essentially undoing what you've already started with the crate training. You are trying to housebreak him and letting him use the bathroom in the house will have a negative effect. Try taking him out every couple hours for now and then let him go longer and longer as the weeks go by. Pretty soon he will be old enough to hold it and you won't have to take him out at night. I have crate trained ALL my dogs and they never have accidents!

You are expecting too much from him. He cannot physically hold it through the night yet. When you get a puppy, you sign up for this sort of thing. Take him out to pee right before bed, set the alarm to wake you up every couple of hours and take him outside to pee again, probably at least once or twice during the night. As he gets older, he will be able to hold it longer. But right now, he just isn't able to. You could find the smallest crate in the world and he would still have to pee in the middle of the night.

He can't hold it more than 4 hours yet at his age.

I was peeing in my crate even with my mommy taking me out throughout the night. So, I finally had to go to the vet and found out that I had a bladder infection. After a tasty round of antibiotics in little pieces of hot dog I am doing much better and am able to hold it until about 4 am. If your tummy feels sore to the touch get your person to take you to the vet. Good Luck!
