Rascal

I got a 3-mo old puppy to be a companion to my almost 2 year old yorkie. They are not getting along well. What now?

My poodle passed away in April leaving my little yorkie-poo Rascal really distraught. He has been given tons of love and attention and yet was getting sick to his stomach and was still extra depressed when I wasnt there to try and fill the void. We asked our vet , who said our only other option was to get another dog. So I did. They got along ok in the beginning, Rascal tried to instigate some play but then Zipper would play too rough. Now Rascal is scared to death of Zipper and is very very aggressive towards him. How can I help them form a positive playful relationship? Should I just give Zipper up in favor of a different playmate? I would prefer not to have to give him away though. Rascal is falling back into his lonely depression. He needs that companion that he can chase all over the house and groom.

Do you do anything with them together? What do you do when Rascal gets aggressive? The issue here is not your dogs, but it is you. If you haven't completely moved on from your previous dog's passing, you are adding to Rascal's problems. Dogs grieve, yes, but they do move on easily. They will look for the missing dog, but when they cannot find him, they will move on. By feeling sorry for Rascal, you are only feeding his issues. Rascal is only reacting to YOUR feelings for your missing dog. Do you walk Rascal at all? Taking him on daily walks will boost his morale and give both of you something to look forward to. Does your puppy annoy Rascal to the point where he is bothered with him? You have to also teach your puppy manners and not let him jump and play all over Rascal whenever he wants. Zipper has to learn to respect everyone too. Start by walking them together. Zipper cannot go very far, but walking will help the two to bond with one another. Please message me if you need more help - I will be more than happy to assist - my word limit is limited here.

Sergeant has given great advice. My yorkie was having a really hard time adjusting to our new pug. She was getting aggressive. One of the most effective things we did to stop it was to walk the two dogs together!!
