I am attempting to find the right dog breed for our family. I am looking for a small dog that can be kept inside.

We have 3 kids (3, and 10 yr old twins), lots of outdoor room to run, and someone is almost always home so they dog will get lots of attention. Im looking for suggestions of some breeds to consider. I have looked into the Maltese and the Westie. Any suggestions?

I have two Boston Terriers, and they are WONDERFUL dogs. They are very friendly (neither have met a stranger) and they love to play. These are the happiest dogs I've ever encountered, no matter what is going on around them. My dogs love children, especially ones that are more than willing to run around the yard and throw sticks and toys for them.

Good luck in your search!

We have 2 miniature pinschers and LOVE the breed! I will always have atleast 1! They are very smart, barely shed, no doggy smell, no drool! They are standard 12 pounds or much less. Iv seen some at 6 pounds! Check out Gingers page and go under family to see Jack. I hear they might not be comfortable around children but cant figure why cause they are very high energy and HILARIOUSE! We laugh every day and talk about them all night.

TEXAS TORNADO

I would say a Boston Terrier, they are such cool, happy dogs. Pugs are supposed to be great with kids. Of course, I have two pits that are great with my family...

Check out mini dachshunds. Not only small, very low maintenance but also playful, loving, loyal, smart and sturdy. They can keep up with the kids and like to do things and are also ok with staying home and chillin out.

Me and all my grown up kids have at least 1. They play well together and love the swimming pool as much as the hiking trails. We take them everywhere we go. They play nice with big dogs too.

They love blankets, sunshine coming through the window and cuddling.

They do shed but it's like eyelashes and it's not much. Very clean and easy to take care of.

You should look in to the Havanese. the were breed in Cuba as an dog for children. In fact they are not happy unless they have a child to "take Care off"
This is a brief description
The Havanese has a playful, friendly temperament which is unlike many other toy dog breeds. It is at home with well behaved children and most other pets, and is rarely shy or nervous around new people. Clever and active, they will often solicit attention by performing tricks, such as running back and forth between two rooms as fast as they can. The Havanese is a very people oriented dog

The dog comes from the same family as the Malties and Bichon.

Beagles and Shelties are good, but they tend to bark so they should be trained to only bark when you ask them to.

A Dachshund is a good choice also, but watch out because if you have stairs, they can really mess up their backs.

A pug is a nice choice, but they tend to snore.

Cocker Spaniels are very nice dogs, who are also good family dogs.

Boston terriers would be a good choice also.

A Miniature Pinscher is a small dog, but they tend to be aggressive, and take time to train.

Last but not least, check out your local animal shelter. 25% of dogs there are purebred, and I'm sure that in time you could find the dog for you, that's the perfect size and temperment for your family. Also try small dog breed rescue groups. They have very nice dogs too.

I hope that this was somewhat helpful. Good luck on your search for the right dog. Remember to spay and neuter your pets, and have fun with them. :-)

I know that mutts are usually a great options. if you have a 3 yr old then you'll want a dog who can tolerate rough play.

My suggestion is somewhat biased, but I recommend Beagles all the way! However, as with all dogs, you need to take certain things into account about each breed. Beagles: Sometimes shed alot, love their food (often a little too much) and can be good escape artists. Up the upside, they're: Really cute, Loving, Friendly, good with kids (if trained from young) and enjoy exercise. This is just a general account. It is probably best if you thoroughly research all the breeds you're considering, just like it appears you are starting to do.

Also, I can't go past a Jack Russell or Foxie. They're gorgeous little dogs and quite small.

Good luck with your search for the most suitable dog breed for your family!

Ali

I would recommend a cocker spaniel---mine is sweet, energetic, playful and loves people, other animals. This particular breed is smart and very easy to train.

Hey there!

I have 2 Yorkies in my house that my entire family absolutely loves. 5 kids, ages 2-16, all enjoy them. They trained super-easy, are extremely intelligent, and love people.also run 5k every morning. They look like adorable little puppies forever if you keep their hair short, or you can let it grow to whatever length you like. They are completely non-allergenic, don't shed -at all-. Their only issue is that having two of them together, they tend to over-excite eachother when people come to the door and that makes them bark. But when we only had the one, he never barked once (unless he -really- had to go pottie :P).

Arianna

I grew up with Austrlian shepherds and now have a miniture one. If they are well socialized, they make great pets for kids. They are very protective and usually very tolorant of rough play. They love to run and play ball and are medium to light shedders.

Beagles! I own a beagle and they are absolutely EXCELLENT dogs. They're the best with children and will love you forever for having a large yard. They are pretty active dogs and may become destructive without daily exercise, but they absolutley love children and they don't get that large. They're usually classified as 'medium' but unless over fed they never usually hit over 30-35 pounds.

But before choosing, please do your research and be especially sure to check out your local rescue groups and shelters. Adopting dogs saves lives
