There is no certification program for pet sitters. However, there is an accreditation program for professional pet sitters, through Pet Sitters International - www.petsit.com to read more about that organization and what they do.

The primary benefit membership in a professional pet sitter organization, such as PSI, offers is that of insurance and bonding. When you pet sit for someone, insurance is a big deal - people want to know you are a professional and that things will be covered should something happen while their pet is in your care.

Beyond insurance and bonding, getting certified in cat and dog CPR and first aid is another great step to being an actual professional. Those classes are offered through the American Red Cross, and you should call the chapter near you to find out when and where they are held.
