how much do you feed a six month old german shepard

My shepard is a 6 month old female (non-spayed yet but will be).

She prefers to eat once aday, and we give her at least 2 cups of dry mixed with half a can of wet food. She eats it all up and seems to be satisfied with that. I am wondering if we should be increasing the amount we having been giving her? What's the scoop on feeding amounts as she grows.

Did you read the bag? Lily's Canidae bag says to feed pups twice as much as an adult the same weight would eat, and to feed twice a day after 6 months. 3 or 4 times a day before 6 months. If she weighs 45 pounds, that would be almost 4 cups of dry. The wet says a can a day for every 20 pounds of body weight for an adult and as much as twice that for a pup. At a year, you go to the adult amounts. Is she growing and gaining weight regularly? What are you feeding her? Canidae is very high calorie and different foods recommend varying amounts.

How much you should feed completely depends on what you're feeding.

Low quality foods (stuff they sell at the grocery store - Iams, Beneful, etc.) require you to feed a lot more because their main ingredients are fillers that don't provide any nutrition to your dog. High quality foods require smaller amounts because they are more nutritious.

Growing large breed pups should not get too much protein because it can cause them to grow faster than their joints and bones can handle, which usually leads to Pano around 7 to 12 months of age. Pano is a painful growth condition.

If you're currently feeding puppy food, now's the time to switch to adult. Go to a quality food like Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae, etc. and stay away from the junk they sell at the grocery store.

Dump the canned food. Unless it's 100% meat (Merrick's Before Grain does 100% meat and tripe cans), it doesn't need to be in her diet. A balanced, quality kibble is enough.
