In my experience, you allow the dog quiet time and it'll do sleep on it's own without having someone needing to regulate it. They'll let you know if they're tired.
I've never known or heard of any need to regulate a dog's sleep.

In my experience as a dog owner of 21 years - about 1 hour less than I'd like. Heh, heh, heh, I love to wake them up and hour early on day-light-savings-time. Ha!
