The vet may do a fecal test........but regular worming should be a part of every dogs maintenance program!

It depends on the type of worm, you can see tape worms in the dogs poo, they usually look like little bits of white rice. But there are many many other types of worms that you cannot see with a bare eye, and vet visit is the only way to know.
Dogs typically have to ingest worms to get them, but that can be as easy as stepping in poo with worms then licking their paw or eating fleas, or rodents that are infested.

Depending on the type of worm you may be able to actually see them in the feces or around the rectum area. Skinny dogs may have a nutritional absorbtion problem (from worms or other) so that could be. Loose stool is another sign. Not just one, but regularly loose stool. The easiest way like mentioned above is to take a stool sample to your vet- and have your step brother do the same with his dog. They will give you some de-worming pills. Very simple solution and they will be able to tell you what kind of worms, if any, are present.

There are five types of worms a dog can have..hook, tape, round, whip and heartworm.
Hookworm's are very easily passed to another dog.
Tapeworm's are spread from ingesting fleas or the eggs. Eggs can be found around the dog's bum or in their poop and they look like grains of rice.
Roundworm's look like spagetti and can be seen in their poop.
Whipworm's are spread through poop or other bodily fluids.
Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes, requires a blood sample.
Taking a fresh fecal sample into the vet is fairly easy and inexpensive. My daughter's pup was treated for 2 type's of worms and the price was $15.00.
If this dog has worms it is probably a very unhappy dog and yes your dog has a good chance of getting them as well. If left untreated a dog can become very sick.
Some of the symptoms of worms are: weight lose, low energy, vomiting, diarrhea, and a bloated belly.

Ask your stepbrother if he has given his dog any type of wormer. If he hasn't, ask him if you can do it. If he agrees, buy a bottle of liquid wormer and give the dog the recommended dose of it. Watch the dog's poo for several days to see if there is any evidence of worms. (particles that look like rice) If there aren't, then suggest that he step up the dog's food so that it will be healthier. Good luck!
