How do I know how long to walk my puppy?

I have a male Beagle pup that was 2 months old on Sept. 1st.
I am wondering how long I should be walking him? I am afraid that I am walking him too much - usually we walk him in the morning, maybe a short walk again around 2 or 3 PM, then a longer walk at the end of the day. The problem is, when we finish walking him, he gets all hyper - jumping around, biting people and barking like crazy. We think it's because he's overtired. Help?

** Please don't bring vaccinations into this. I have that sorted out.

Hi Sprite!

The walk may have revved you up for a good romp! We puppies jump, nip, and bark to entice each other to play. When you bite, your humans should stop all interaction. No eye contact, no talking, just turn and walk away. Close the door if necessary; be separate for five minutes, then resume play. You will soon learn to stop.

If you haven't started training yet, go to www.k9techsupport.com and read the articles titled How do I teach my dog to pay attention to me? and How do I keep my dog calm around distractions? Follow the step-by-step instructions on training the basics, and you will start to calm down. The mental focus required to learn and follow commands will help you calm down.

Hunting and sniffing games (find the kibble, etc.) are good.

Once you're done with vaccinations, trips to the dog park should help - you can play and socialize with other dogs, and you will get nice and tired. And a tired dog is a good dog!

Good luck!

Well, I am afraid I will have to bring vaccinations into this. Your dog needs all of his or her vaccinations before your dog is able to meet other dogs or go on longer than 20 minute walks per day. After your dog's final vaccinations, wait about two or three days. Throughout the first year, I would only walk your dog for 20 minutes per day. If your dog seems too energetic at home, you can do 10-15 more minutes, but no more. If you need anything else, feel free to paw mail me! Hope this helps!

Lots of Licks,

Jet

Hi, maybe your puppy is so excited by going on the walk; he is over excited and doesn’t know how to calm down. He might need help regaining his composure. Auda just goes ballistic when our person comes home from work. She stops him from jumping and helps him stand still while being petted. He calms down and remembers his manners.
