How can I retrain my 2.5 yr Min Schnauzer to poop outside w/out a walk? He's bright and still trainable (I believe). Tx!

He's trained to go outside. I have no problems w/him going inside, but he has to go on a lengthy walk before pooping. I don't have this problem w/peeing. I didn't mind this when I lived in Atlanta, but I'm up North now and am not looking forward to a snowy, cold winter and these walks. He was crate trained within a month using training treats.

I am not sure you can do it. Dogs need exercise to stimulate elimination. You might try a stimulating game of fetch before going out.

We had a similar issue with our husky when we adopted him (he was 6.5 years old) and he still prefers long walks. He never completely got to the point of doing his business in our yard until recently...and we have had him for 2.5 years.
Since we adopted a puppy 7 months ago and his walks became shorter, he learned in a few weeks that he wasn't going to always get a long walk and began pooping in our yard, but only in a particular area. It took some time and confusion on his part, but after each shorter walk, I would take him to his preferred area and give him opportunity to do his business. If nothing, then I would take him back out a bit later.
I would suggest at least some exercise, either play time or short walk, and then take your dog to the same area every time. Make sure to be patient and suffer some standing in the cold, if needed (we've been there.) And ALWAYS praise profusely and give a treat when he does his business where you want, even if you sound like a fool! Good luck!
