Im moving to Germany from the Miami,FL. with my dog and can't help but worry about what danger might be involved with flying for him.Are some airlines safer? Is there anything one can do to lessen the stress and more importantly make sure it get through it alive? Has anyone ever had problems with flying LTU/Air Berlin or or any other airline?
I've looked into traveling by boat (Cunard seems to be the only one that allows pets) but they only travel to England where it is required to quarantine the pet.
PLEASE HELP : (
I have always thought that flying a dog is too stressful on the animal. I would never do it myself if I had to move I'd wait until the dog died of old age before I'd put him through that. I consider all this before purchasing a pup. Am I going to be in this resplendence for the duration of his life? If I have to move will it be close by? I socialize my dogs so they are used to traveling in the car, vacationing in cabins in the mountains etc. Somewhere I can get to by car.
But to throw him on a plane to be handled by unknown people because I wanted to take him with me to another country I wouldn't even entertain the idea. If my life changed so drastically that I had to leave the country to live, I'd find him a new home and I'd let him visit the new home often with me to reduce the stress even further when the time came for me to depart for good. That is still stressful for a dog, but not as bad as a plane flight, a foreign land, where the food and water is different etc.

The danger is real. A year or 2 ago, the FAA began requiring airlines to collect and publish statistics on pets. They may be domestic flights only, but may be the best info you can find.
My experience is quite limited, one short flight where I kept the dog in the cabin.

well get a direct flight with no delays in changing over any where.
Make sure your crate is right.
Water and food bowl.
Have all your importing paperwork done
When you get there they may have you go to customs to get the dog back off the plane.
So you may be looking at 11-12 hr all together from take off to customs.
Make sure dog then goes to vet after 24 hrs. for check up. The quarantine is a paper, take the dog out and be normal, it is something required by law in case the dog has somewhere been bitten and is infected with rabies, so it is their job to ensure everyone safety. The dog will be stressed yes, but should be fine. At the worst maybe a bladder infection from holding his pee so long. Line your crate with newspapers.
