I have tried benadryl up to 150 mg without making her sleepy or tranquil. She stands on long trip, foams at the mouth, etc. Any suggestions so that we can enjoy our long trips - we travel 2x per year between Oregon and Arizona.

The safest place for a dog in a car is in a crate secured in the back. I agree with the others, a crate. Benadryl is to stop itching from allergies. If you must use something, try Rescue Remedy. I think you find it at health food stores.

I had a dog with the same problem years ago. The only thing that worked for us was to put her in a crate while driving. That helped her very much. With the crate we never felt she needed any additional medication. The small enclosed space made her feel more secure and she actually would lay down and seem to be comfortable in her crate. She had not problems getting in or out of the crate when we had to take breaks. It also helped that we had a van so there was plenty of room for her.

Try food treats and chew bones, with potty breaks but use a crate much safer and less stressful then sitting in the wide open. If she needs air you can roll down the window and or turn on the air. I would not use benadryl, just a crate with soft blankie and some to chews.
