Glucosamine/Chondroitin how much would you give and how early? Brewers yeast for fleas

I know theres three questions, but any answers are appreciated. Abby used to take a vitamin for dogs with glucosamine and chondroitin and brewers yeast. I read the ingredients list and realized that the lady at the pet store had rercommended something to me with garlic and onions in the topr four ingredients. boy did i feel dumb. So I was wondering, how much glucosamine. chondroitin would be appropriate for her weight (60lbs) I though 350 mg once a day (a little less half the adult dose-- its a combination vitamin for humans)Do younger dogs need to take vitamins? also there was brewers yeast in the prev vitamin,I knew it helped with shedding, but I also heard it works with detterring fleas, has anyone tried this? Thanks for the help and patience with all the questions!

Always ask your vet when giving meds or suppliments. Does your dog have a problem that you need to give the glucosamine?
Don't know about brewers yeast for shedding
There's a rumor going on around here about garlic being usede to prevent ticks. No, get the stuf like frontline that will work instead of taking a chance. If you feed your dogs the best food (not the stuf they sell in the supermarkets) you can afford you shouldn't need to add vitamins. Great brands are Nutro and Wellness, Solid Gold. They arenot the least expensive but don't you want the happiest healthiest dog?
Boof!

I give my 6 yr. old Lab Cosequin DS,recommended by my vet for stiffness in his joints. It is made for dogs and the dosages are on the bottle.I don't think I would trust giving him a product made for human consumption. It is widely available on the internet and has made a world of difference for him.As for the shedding, try a Furminator grooming tool.It works wonders.

Kaly gave you a good answer. I think you are not supposed to give glucosamine to dogs under a certain age. I would ask your vet about that.

I have heard about the brewers yeast, but it has been my experience that none of that stuff works keeping fleas away. If you want to deter fleas, I'd go with Frontline or Advantix.

Misty

I decided to switch my lab mix to a food called Flint River Ranch because I wanted a food with omega 3 and 6 in it. Another Dogster recommended it. The omegas help with shedding and are good for joint health. At only 4, I thought Misty was just too young to be so stiff. Flint River is the same price as the Nutro she was on. It's only available on the internet, but the shipping is free. Look for the one with millet. A quick call to your vet is also a good idea.
