Dogaware.com is a terrific source of information on feeding dogs. At the bottom of the home page there is a list of articles the site owner wrote for Whole Dog Journal. You can get lots of ideas on feeding your dog there.
Sedona started a wonderful thread about developing a home cooked diet for dogs using Nutritiondata.com for food nutrients and a spreadsheet containing the latest NRC numbers for dog nutrition. It is posted on the Homemade Food Forum here on Dogster.

If you follow those not really so easy steps the food will be much more wholesome than any bought dog food and exactly formulated for your dog.
Sassy's health improved on home cooked food. She stopped stinking, her anal sacs stopped bothering her, her ears got even cleaner and her teeth stay cleaner. And she is a very old very sick dog! I encourage you to keep researching the subject and find out what you need to make up a good food for your dog.

Be sure to really do your research before feeding any homeprepared diet. Balancing the meals is very important. Look at both sides of the issue, and have a chat with your vet, though I don't recommend taking her word as gospel truth just because she's a vet. Admittedly, I made the decision to feed Treader raw without consulting the vet, mostly because of some of the accounts I've heard of vet having extreme reactions and refusing to provide veterinary service over it. But those reactions seem to be few and far between. Anyway, I did eventually inform the vet of Treader's big switch in diet, and while she's against the raw diet, upon seeing how much Treader has improved health-wise, she told me to keep it up.
Anyway, I recommend asking for support resources and such in Dogster's homecooked forum. For resources on the raw diet, read this thread: www.dogster.com
Bone content is important in a raw diet, but you can make up for it easily with crushed egg shells.

I am not sure why vets are so negative on raw and home made. Perhaps they see too many dogs on those diets that didn't show any symptoms until it was too late.
Aster had cancer in her jaw the last year of her life. She could no longer eat her kibble. We tried several things, but spent the 15'th year of her life eating regular Pro Plan softened with water. I knew she was still getting the same complete and balanced diet she had always eaten. You can try softening his kibble. You could also try a similar canned or semi moist food.

Gracie is nearly toothless too AND she has chronic pancreatitis. Our vet had us switch to a soft, low fat food. Gracie loves the Pedigree weight management food.
