With light nails, it si easy to see in good light. with black ones, you can just cut a little off at a time, but more frequently.

I like the Dremel. homepages.udayton.edu

I usually cut Odies nails inside when it's brightest like in the afternoon. A few times I got someone to hold a flash light on his nails so I could see better. Problem is he's got some black nails so I usually use a grinder for those.

I have a dog with black nails and i get nervous when cutting hers. My vet told me the quick normally starts right around when the curve stops. So cut were the curve stops and you should be good. Works for me.

If your dog has dark nails, it can be helpful to have your dog lay on her side, so you can see the individual nails from below when cutting them. You should clearly see the new nail growth and the more solid nail (where the quick is) when viewing their underside. Use the clippers to trim off little bits at a time, not one big clip, as that is gentler on the nails and the chances of cutting the quick are lower.

The Dremel is a great alternative and allows you to get very close to the quick without doing any damage to it, resulting in shorter and smoother nails.

I tend to clip the most recent growth with the clippers and then dremel the nails down and smooth them afterward.
