Can you work 7 hours/day and still have a Siberian husky?

I am considering becoming a teacher (I'm a college student) and would love to care for a Siberian husky. I am aware that they are a huge responsiblity, so my question is: can the dog be alone while I am at work for that long? What are your experiences with this? Thanks!

I have a siberian husky and I work 10 hours shifts. I recommend a very big cage and kennel train them when they are puppies. As he or she gets older, let them stay out of the cage more and more and eventually as long as he or she has something to chew while ur gone they should be fine. I got a second puppy and found that the husky has someone to play with and seems happier but also gets into double trouble. Alot of breeders and people with experience will tell u they are better when paired up b/c they are very energetic but as long as u take the time to go on a jog or roller blade a mile a day or play with them enough they will be awesome. And they are AMAZING with kids and I totally recommend one. AND REMEMBER: BONES BONES BONES
Good luck.

Hi, do you have a securely fenced yard for the husky to run and play in. My person works ten hours a day, but we live in the woods and it is safe for Auda and I to stay outside while she is gone. If you don’t have a yard or kennel safe enough to leave a dog in, could you get someone to let the Husky out to pee in the afternoon while you are gone?
If you live in an apartment or a house without a fenced yard, keeping a large active dog is possible but hard and requires a huge amount of dedication from the owner. My previous owner tried to keep me in an apartment, it didn’t work out and I ended up being abused by being locked in a too small kennel 12 to 14 hours a day. I would pee on myself when I could no longer hold it and the kennel was to small stretch out in or get away from my own mess.

I wouldn't reccomend it, but as long as you give a dog at least an hour of exersice per day, and the dog seems tired and content, go ahead.

There are other big dogs that I'd consider getting if I lived in an apartment (I'm assuming since you're a college student) before I would get a husky. Please contact a local husky rescue group and ask them to tell you more about the breed and whether or not you are a good fit for a husky. Also, the AKC has lists of registered breeders (you can search by zip code) who might be willing to discuss with you the breed. Huskies are great dogs but have specific needs. Good Luck, you're doing the right thing by asking questions before you get a dog.

First of all, I must warn you: Siberian Huskies are lovely and attractive dogs, strong and inteligent (excelent for sledge races) but they usually don't make great pets. They are very independent and hard to train, and even somewhat agressive thowards kids and etc. What you have here is a dog that needs to run 5 miles a day pulling a cart behind, cannot stand hot weather, will leave fur all over the place... I usually find the poor creatures stuck inside apartments barking out of boredoom - since the huskies became a fashion acessory, this has become over-whelming popular.
If you truly wish a husky, and are ready for what I mencioned, the best is to get someone to look after it. Huskies are very independent, but they are very pack animals who suffer when left alone. Best to have 2 dogs and someone to walk them.
Good luck!
