can a dog be having a period and be pregnant at the same time?
Our dog is into the second week of her period but seems to be gaining weight around her stomach and pants a lot when she is resting, things that we noticed usually happen during her past pregnancies. We have kept a close eye on her and she has not gone out of our house for the past six weeks. Thanks.

She is probably experiencing a false pregnancy.
Not to seem rude, but if you are not familiar with false pregnancies and the like, then why has she had past litters? To breed without the necessary knowledge is extremely risky.

Dogs don't have periods, they come in season. That is the only time they can get pregnant.
Take your dog to the vet. Get the dog fixed. You don't need puppies and you don't need to inflict more mixed breed puppies on the world. There are too many being killed each day for lack of good homes.

If it were my dog I would not ask here, I would take her to the vet immediately.
A dog can have an infected uterus, this can be extremely dangerous for the health of your dog.
It can cause a fever, pain and extreme distress on the animal. most cases however require immediate spay which will save her.
This sounds exactly what is going on. I think that the stomach is not going to seem enlarged on the second week of heat, but a severe infection inside the uterine walls.
Don't wait please. A simple ultrasound will show the bodies of babies if she is pregnant.
I see you mention 6 weeks. Gestation for a dog is 63 days give or take.
