Any ideas on breed?`

Our landlord is causing some major issues because he's decided to yell 'Pitbull!' at our new dog. She's 6 months old, 16inches at the shoulder and 25~lbs. The people at the pound (we took her there to get a breed idea) said she won't grow more than 1 more inch because of her age. Everyone has seen different breeds in her. The people at the pound looked in books to try and figure it out and came out with some really strange ideas.
The only part that resembles a pit is her eyes, but I think that could be a boxer thing too? And the brindle is throwing everyone. Even people at the vet actually looked at her and took their dogs out of the waiting room. She's a tiny thing and they're scared of her.

I think she's part pointer, part boxer, part rabbit.

She does the pointing stance pretty flawlessly. Though she doesn't point at anything in particular.

Any ideas would be helpful. We're going to the vet tomorrow for an opinion and I wouldn't mind some breeds to bring up with them.

She is such a beautiful dog-I love her ears! (Those are definitely not pitbull ears!) Anyway-My dog Henry is a brindle coat and I've had people assume he is a pitbull. But my vet thinks he is a boxer/hound mix. Anyway boxer is a good guess, also maybe a Corgi-they have large ears and can have a brindle coat as well, and they are short dogs. Hopefully the vet can give you a better idea-that is a bummer that the landlord is giving you a hard time.
Good Luck!

Miss Buddie

She looks more boxer than pit to me, but I'm not sure about the brindle coloring.

I'm certainly no expert but my untrained eye sees some terrier in her whether it be staffordshire or pit bull.

Not sure why the brindle is throwing everyone when I believe there are some brindles in both the staffordshire & pit bull lines. Again, I've done no research so it's all speculation.

Can you just tell your landlord that she's part staffordshire terrier, some people are so clueless that they dont know they are closely related to pit bulls. Poor pitties get such a bad rap.

Jack

I agree with you on the part rabbit. LOL!

She looks more like a staffordshire terrier than pit, but she could have some in there. Brindle is foud in boxers, staffies and pits, so its hard to tell based on that alone. I'm certain she's not purebred anything, let alone pit.

My suggestion? Calmly tell (or better yet, write a letter) to your landlord that explains this:

"While we're aware of your concern about our new dog's breed, we are confident that you cannot know (any better than we do) of her exact breed makeup. Even if she were a purebred Pit Bull Terrier, which is highly unlikely, there is no logical reason to suspect that she is any danger, whatsoever. She is a calm and gentle dog and our situation should be judged on our responsibilty as owners as well as her calm demeanor. We are going to enroll her in puppy obedience classes and we don't feel it is logical or fair to negatively judge either us or the dog as tenants until such time as you have a fair reason to do so.

I would say Pit mix - mixed with what, I have no idea. But her head definitely is a Pit/Staffie/something of that variety.

Look at your lease... does it specify no bully breeds, or list specific breeds? If not, I'm not sure your landlord can spring that on you now. We don't have breed restrictions in our leases, but the main reason people do is because of the very high insurance liability, or the chance that their insurance will drop them. Unfortunately, if you signed a lease that says No Pits (or mixes thereof) then you don't have a super argument... but something to try would be to get the vet to write "Boxer mix" or something on her vet visit records. What a crappy situation, I'm so sorry!

my dad had a dog almost exactly like yours. He got from a rescue group and his vet told him it looked as if it was a cross between a pit bull and a chihuaua. his dog weighted 40 lbs.

Zoey

I would say if your going to the vet ask them about DNA testing. It will cost you a little bit of money but you wouldn't have any question as to what breed she has in her. I knew someone that did it and her dog had like 8 breeds. Just a suggestion! Either way you look at it she's a beautiful dog!

hi. your cute pup seems to look like she might have some bull terrier in her???? and maybe some boxer as well. i honestly don't see the pitt bull in her... my son has a boxer/pitt bull and your cute pup does not resemble his at all. so sorry to hear you are getting flac about your pet! many people do not understand it is the owner and how they treat the dog and not the dog!
go to the ACK web site at www.akc.org. it is so very helpful!

Starbutt

Yes I would say pitbull MIX the ears to what I have seen are not pitbullish but even so a pit is a good dog as long as you don't bring out the aggression.

Storm

You look a heck of a lot like a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the size fits too. Those ears are somethin' else though, aren't they? My guess is that you've got Frenchie in you and that's what contributed your glorious ears!

AKC pages for both: www.akc.org www.akc.org

Historically Staffies are known for being GREAT with kids. Frenchies were bred to be companion dogs for French lace makers. Though APBTs don't deserve the reputation they have, I think you can probably say with confidence that this dog is NOT an APBT, which nips that whole issue in the bud. I think one of the best things that can be done as far as awareness about BSL and people's attitudes about APBTs is to help them realize that bully breeds are all unique as breeds and individuals! A history of violence towards other animals and people is only a small unfortunate bit of the long and POSITIVE history of these breeds.

TK, CGC

I agree I think your dog is at least part "pit bull" (Am Staff or Am Pit Bull, looks too leggy for a Staffie). Pittie ears can look like that for sure! They are very expressive. And, both pit bull breeds and Boxers can have brindled coats.

Well if I was to guess i would say it would be a cross between a staffordshire bull terrier and a french bulldog they are both brindle and the french bulldog has those ears and the staff has the look of yours, I hope that helps, good luck.

Pedro

Well I hate to agree with your landlord but I do think that you have a Pit Bull or at the least a Pit Bull mix on your hands.
Keep in mind a few things when it comes to her size. One she is a female and they are smaller then males as a general rule. Two is that she is still a pup and has a little bit of growning to do.
The ears can be common in a Pit Bull it just depends on her parents and the line that she came from. Some lines have naturally standing ears. The brindle color doesn't come from many breeds so it shouldn't be to hard to figure out adding structure and traits along with behavior.
If you are curious,Pit Bulls should normally range in weight any where between 25-45 punds for females and no more then 60 pounds for males. These huge dogs that you see walking around these days are not the TRUE traits of the Pit Bull. Most of those huge dogs have been cross bred with Am. Bulldogs and such.Google Colby lines of Pit Bulls & see what a real Pit looks like.

Ginger Smiles Primm

my friend had this prob with no AKC papers. She made an appointment with a vet and when he asked the breed she said "Staffordshire Terrier" She showed the bill to the landlord and suggested he pay for DNA testing. (It takes a long time) He didnt want to pay. Just offer to pay pet rent and I also agree with Jack. (as usual)

Burkett's Cookies 'n' Creme

Oh, I am so sorry that your dog is getting discriminated. Having a German Shepherd, people are that way with my dogs too.
Pit Bulls are the sweetest dogs ever, but I don't think that your dog is one.
