My 5 month old Chihuahua will not use the bathroom outside. I take him out constantly, but he will not go outside. I have tried puppy pads, but he refuses to use those as well. Does anyone have any ideas of how to potty train Chihuahua to go outside, use puppy pads, or a litter box? Anything is better than my rug...
UPDATE: I keep the grass short, and I know he does not have an allergy to it because he loves to roll around in it.
Thank You!
I am having the same problem with my almost 5 month old JRT, some kind pups posted some good ideas below under my Question
"House Training Not Going So Well..",
maybe they might help you .
Good luck, I need it to,lol.

Little dogs can be harder to train. Maybe they don't like the feel of grass on their belly (try cutting your grass REALLY short), or perhaps the dog is allergic to grass (in which case you could set off a grassless or concrete part of the yard just for her to potty in).

Chi's are very hard to housebreak and it takes time and patience to do so.

My male chi was soooo hard to potty train. There's no real trick to it except being very consistent and constantly vigilant.
Good luck. Chis are wonderful companions.

We have the same problem with my JRT/Chiuahua mix. She has gotten to the point where she will use the restroom outside but then comes in and 5 minutes later uses the bathroom again. Does your dog pee a little at a time. We learned Sasha is playing games with us but we have almost corrected that, she's getting much better it took a while to even get her to go outside she doesn't like the texture change from the concrete to grass.

Wow! I read all the answers here and am shocked! I have 7 Chihuahuas, all are outside/pad trained. I use both, just in case I am gone and they need to potty, the pad is there. I have never had a problem housebeaking any of mine. I never used a crate or anything! The only things I did were:
1. Set a shedule for outside, leave pad very accessible.
2. I took their food/ water away everynight around 7:00 pm.
3. when they had an accident in the house I would soak it up with the pad and then let the pup smell it.
That is all I did, never had a problem. Accidents were very few.
Good Luck!!!!

I found a fun little Housetraining 101 quiz put out by the Dunbar Training Center (they also give advice!): dogtime.com

Hi:
In the past my Mom owned three Chihuahua's and they can be difficult to train. I know they don't like the grass tickling their belly so maybe try keeping the grass short. The last Chihuahua she had wouldn't train at all so she got a boot tray and lined it with paper and she used that all the time. It's a bit of a pain to have the tray around all the time but it's better than having little puddles everywhere!
Good luck.

Have you heard of crate training? Crates make housetraining simple. Because dogs don't like to pee or poop where they sleep and eat, they'll hold it when they're in their crate.

I own a chihuahua and he is about 3 months old. I started training him on the puppy pads, and I just recently have been trying to get him to get used to going outside. To train him on the pads, I would just set him on the pad every hour or so and say "Go Potty." It's important to make sure that you use the same phrase every time that he goes to the bathroom. Also, after he would go, I always give him a treat and say, "Good puppy!" He still is not perfect, and will have accidents every once in a while, but he is getting the hang of it. As far as training outside goes, I took a piece of his poo and put it outside so that he could smell it, and I, again, used the phrase, "Go potty." That is how I have been training my chihuahua. Hopefully this helps you out! Good luck.
