Any experience on taking your dogs to Australia?

We might move there next year and I want to know if anyone knows about the import procedure. I know you have to bring your dogs from a "rabies free" list of countries but sadly I dont live in one. I will be willing to contact an agent to help me out but Iam really clueless. Any info will be appreciated.

Hi, I live in Australia and its a great place. As you may know it is a rabies free country which is fantastic. I do not know much about bringing other pets into the country. I do know that Bob will have to go into quarentine. Dogs and cats can be brought over from America. I suggest that you visit this website.

I can't help with much, but I know that there will most likely be a quarantine period of around 6 months. I live in NZ, which is also rabies free and we have a similar requirement.

I have taken a dog into australia and 2 dogs and a cat out. I found the Australia Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQUIS) website to have all the relevant info. You don't need to from a rabies-free state - There is quite a importing process which involves specifically qualified vets and a state vet - and it does take 5 months observation (which is relative minor) plus a minimum of one month quarantine in Aussieland.
When in quarantine you are liable for food and board - however, you can visit your pet daily which is nice.
When travelling so far - you need to make sure to arrive in australia on their weekday - remember that Sydney & Melbourne are approx. 17 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time.
Good luck -also I don't think United will fly animals to Australia anymore but they were a lot cheaper than Qantas. Good luck
