Adopt, or not to adopt, that is the question...

Hey Everyone! I'm getting a doggy soon and I'm so happy about it! I've done TONS of research and I am prepared for the responsibility, but I have a big problem! I love Coton de Tulear dogs a lot, not just because they're cute, but because of their personality. Being cute helps though. Anyways, I also REALLY support rescuing from shelters and rescues. I don't know whether to buy (from a reputable breeder of course), or to adopt??? I know that there are lots of great dogs in the shelters that need loving homes, but my mom really wants a Coton. Please help???

Well, I'm highly biased, but I favor adopting a rescue pup. If the dog is to be yours & you're the main caregiver, then I think you should choose which breed. But, if it's a family dog, then you all will have to vote on it. Even purebreds can be found in shelters due to the bad economy.

Bottom line is, whatever you get, just love & care for it so you all have a great life!

As someone who has adopted her last three dogs, I'm all for adoption. The satisfaction of making a difference is immensely rewarding. Often, people who adopt dogs say their dogs seem to bond with them in way they don't experience with purchased animals who have never been scared or abandoned. Of couse, that's not always the case. Some rescues are challenging.

That brings me to an important point and one that I stress over all others: you never know what you're getting until you get a dog home. That goes for shelter dogs AND purchased dogs. Healthwise and temperment wise. Dogs who look great in the shelters can be challenging once home. Dogs who look challenging in the shelter can be the best behaved dog ever.

Also, purebred dogs of all ages end up in shelters. If you're patient, you can find a Coton resuce.

Personally, I would only ever adopt or rescue.

But, there are plenty of Dogsters here who purchased and are fabulous owners.

My advice, adopt if you can, but if you don't, it's no biggie.
With a little searching, you should be able to find a Coton-specific rescue. See if they have any dogs up for adoption that would work for you.
Best wishes.

I would try to adopt. Here's a great plan, though......

Go on www.petfinder.com or look up "Coton De Tulear Rescue Groups".

Find a Coton rescue group. There is a rescue group somewhere in the U.S. for almost every breed. But, I would also suggest that you visit your local shelter and the shelters of neighboring cities and see if you can fall in love with another type of dog. Or go to a rescue site that deals in another breed. I'd bet that you wouldn't be able to go home empty handed.
I went to a rescue place and I was going to take home a German Shepherd which is my favorite dog, which is what I had my heart set on and I ended up taking home a smooth coat St. Bernard and it was love at first sight.
I would really suggest that you just spend some time looking at shelters and rescue places and see if you can find a pup there that'll steal your heart.
