I am a big believer in crates, but hate to see any dog left over 4-5 hours. If you can't make it back to give it a mid day break, see if a neighbor or professional dog walker can. Doggy day care is a great idea too.

Yes just be sure a warm bedding and some kind of pee/poo papers on the floor, usually the bed shoukld be at the very back, and cover w/ a light towel, Since most will sleep all day, do not put food, or toys he can choke on, & depending on your areas weather, keep out of direct sun, Metal can get very hot.
a small dish of water is ok, but one he can;t knock over.

Depending on the duration, your dog should be quiet happy to stay in a crate in you give him a walk first so he will be in the mood for a nap or if you dont have time to walk him you could use a treadmill at a low speed if you have one. No dog should be left in a crate for more than 3 hours at a time.
